Failing Forward: A Photography Contest

Failing Forward: A Photography Contest In-Person

Did you know….

  • Walt Disney was fired from his job at a newspaper because he “lacked imagination”?
  • Steven Spielberg was rejected from film school 3 times?
  • Oprah Winfrey was fired from her first TV job as a news anchor?

What do these people all have in common? They didn’t let failure stop them.

This year PVCC’s One Book program is focusing on the Angela Duckworth book called Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance. Grit describes one psychologist’s attempt to
study the nature of what makes a person succeed. Duckworth posits that it has less to do with a person’s innate talent than their ability to get back up when they are defeated and
try again.

The idea of failure is baked into the artistic process – every masterpiece was made up of a series of steps that didn’t quite work. In the process of revising or adjusting a sketch, a
sculpture, or a painting, the artist doggedly moves the project forward. With each revision there is failure and (hopefully) some success. The artist builds on the successes and learns from the failures. The goal is to use the failure to move the project forward (ie: fail forward) so the end result eventually matches the artist’s vision.

Your challenge is to find a visual way of using a photograph to tell the story of:

  • failing, but failing forward.
  • failing, but getting back up.
  • failing as just one step along the road to success.
  • persisting, in spite of difficult odds

The contest will be judged by the Student Success Team.
